Robert Downey Jr. Returns to Marvel – But Not as Iron Man

In a stunning twist that has sent shockwaves through the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Robert Downey Jr. is officially returning—but not as Tony Stark/Iron Man. Instead, the Oscar-winning actor will take on one of Marvel’s most iconic villains: Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday (2026) and Avengers: Secret Wars (2027) 1810.

Why the Big Comeback?

1. Replacing Kang After Jonathan Majors’ Exit

Marvel initially planned for Kang the Conqueror (Jonathan Majors) to be the next big MCU villain, but Majors was fired in late 2023 following his assault conviction 1. With Kang’s storyline abruptly shelved, Marvel needed a new overarching antagonist—and Doctor Doom emerged as the perfect replacement 10.

2. A Multiverse Twist

Since Tony Stark’s heroic death in Avengers: Endgame (2019), bringing him back as Iron Man would undermine his emotional sendoff. Instead, Downey Jr. will play Victor Von Doom, potentially as a variant from another universe where Tony Stark never became a hero—or even merged with Doom’s identity 18.

“New mask, same task,” Downey teased at San Diego Comic-Con 2024 while unmasking himself onstage 3.

How Does This Fit Into the MCU?

  • Doom’s Rise: The Fantastic Four movie (First Steps, 2025) will introduce Doom’s world, setting up his clash with the Avengers 3.
  • Multiversal War: Avengers: Doomsday will likely adapt the comic storyline where Doom steals godlike power to reshape reality, leading into Secret Wars 17.
  • Massive Crossover: The film will feature X-Men, Fantastic Four, Thunderbolts, and classic Avengers, making it the MCU’s biggest team-up yet 7.

Fan Reactions: Excitement & Skepticism

  • Pros: Downey’s acting range makes him an inspired choice for the complex, egomaniacal Doom 8.
  • Cons: Some fans worry Marvel is relying too much on nostalgia instead of developing new villains 12.

What’s Next?

  • Filming begins: 2025
  • Release dates:
    • Avengers: Doomsday – May 1, 2026
    • Avengers: Secret Wars – May 7, 2027 7

With the Russo Brothers back directing and a star-studded cast, Marvel is betting big on this multiversal saga. Will Downey’s Doom become the MCU’s greatest villain—or a misstep? Only time will tell.
